Qualifying Final vs Oak Park
1 August 2010
ROUND 14 SCORES
And the next week......
Well what a difference a week can make in football!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am still to come to terms with the fact that for the WHOLE year I have been talking about 1% ers, come our first final and if not for a few of you, the rest looked like they were from Airport West!!!!!!
How hard is it for EVERY backline player to have an arm across an opponent, to block there run, to bump them off the ball to make impact on the contest, to be IN FRONT!!
How hard is it for EVERY forward line player to actually lead at the ball carrier, to actually stand on the correct side of the contest when the ball is coming in, to push off their opponent, (like we have done at training for the last 5 WEEKS), to use their VOICE, to DEMAND the football, to actually touch the ball!!
Midfield and wingers, need to be accountable for a man, yep ANY man!!!!!
As we told you before the game their players will dag off the contest and wait for you to get in and under, then under pressure you cough up the ball and they are away, we told you that they will start players on the ball and then run out to the wings, so guess what, that means another player is coming in from somewhere else!! Now when that players runs to go on ball it doesn’t mean you are a free player it just means you aren’t paying attention to what is going on around you (AWARENESS), you need to MAN UP on player coming out!!!!!! Not rocket science guys!!!!!
A few little tips for you to take with you:-
When you are kicking with a wind that strong aim to kick it 20 metres inside the boundary NOT 5,
DON’T stand on the wind side of your opponent (WHY), (kicking to advantage- sound familiar?)
Kick the ball for penetration, not little floaters to a contest,
When we lose 2 in a row in middle MAN ON MAN!!!
Why handball 15 mts when you can kick 30.
Right……….
That’s the negatives for what was effectively our WORST game of the year, people say it’s good to have a loss into or at start of finals, let’s hope that was our last for this year!!! We worked for the double chance; now let’s use it to our advantage.
Boys we need to really play like we have been playing for the past 5 weeks, matter of fact ALL year, good, tough, hard, accountable, running all day, talking, backing up team mates, bumping, tackling, harassing, smothering and run off half back line.
It will be a hard week on the track, please make sure EVERYBODY who can is there, we have a lot to go over again, get right back to basics and lets really come out firing against a team we beat pretty comfortably last time, we match up well and we should be a lot quicker than them, just got to remember to listen to what we are saying to you and do what you have been doing all year.
GENERAL AIMS
- Communicate & organise
- Play on quickly- back 10 metres around 5 meters (reel & go)
- No u turns- feed up off the ground
- Keep your feet (one man short if your on the ground)
- Run hard contest the contest
- Accountability
- Aggressively protect the ball carrier
- Crumb front and centre
- Kick for height
- Use first option
- Reward the runners
- Be confident and back yourself
- Win your own ball
- No short kicks to 50/50 contests
- Effective use of ball, if nobody free, kick long down the lines to tall’s, all smalls front and centre
- Know all set plays and team structures
- Tall’s make a presence
- Smalls, hard running to front and centre
A big loss to our team this week, with Dom going down with a wrist fracture and will miss the rest of year. Dom has been fantastic to our team all year and will be sorely missed on the ground with his fearless attitude at the contest. Hope all is well and someone will step into the huge hole that is left without him in the team. Get well soon, from all of us.
Thank you to Connor and Josh from our u14’s for playing your help was greatly appreciated.
Let’s have a real good week on the track and show all we mean business on the weekend.
Need a HUGE lift this week boys!!!!

Round 13 - Match Day report - Moonee Valley
18th July 2010
One Team - One Purpose
Another Good Team Effort and 3RD on the ladder
Guys well done on another terrific effort today, leading at ¼ time against the wind to start the game showed everyone watching you meant business today. I think everyone had a crack and everyone must be happy with our effort this week. Hopefully you can all see the advantages of our team style of play and how good you guys work to that plan, as we keep reinforcing time after time if you play tough hard accountable football the ball will fall your way.
Great to see big Anth getting plenty of touches and Sead taking mark after mark, our run from half backline was superb again, keep it up. Nice to see Dave ‘Hollywood’ Reinmuth returning too! As you can see if you get the ball into our forward line in the right way, the boys there will give you a contest at a minimum, remember look up, steady and deliver. Midfields as a whole were terrific!!
Guys now that is over and we are coming into another important game, the last time we played these guys we were slightly out played, but only outscored in 1 ¼, so obviously we are just as good as these guys, you just have to believe it and as you showed this week and against Hadfield you can take it up to these teams, YOU just need to BELIEVE IT!!! Let’s turn that loss around and show these guys we are here for the long haul and NOBODY gets in our way.
Guys it’s a simple equation this week-
-we win, we can go to 2nd, at worst we stay 3rd, DOUBLE chance in finals!!!!
-we lose; we slide to 4th and lose double chance if Avondale win!!!!
Where do you want to finish?
Training this week we will continue with our skill work, keep doing your own extra work or get together if you can and have a kick, outside of training. It will only benefit you in the last ¼ of a game.
There will be a couple of changes this week as our div5 team needs to win to make finals, so be prepared to help these guys out to get into finals.
Well done to Josh and Ben from u14’s. They didn’t know what to do on you Ben!
Also a big thank you to all our parents for the home and away season, hopefully we can go along way into finals and the boys will continue to do you proud, Thanks
Well done boys!

Round 10 - Match Day report - Hadfield
27th June 2010
Terrific effort!
What a difference a week can make in football, from the outset you could tell you were up for the fight this week. Your first quarter was by far the best football you have played for the year, the intensity was superb.
To take the top team all year to 3 points was a great effort, unfortunately we couldn’t hold on but that’s football, as I said their coach does not want to play us in the finals and says we are by far the best team they have played all year.
You showed everyone at the game what a good side you can be and when everybody puts in and not leave it to others, no one will stop you! Unfortunately with only 18 players to start, we simply ran out of legs, not through lack of trying or wanting, it simply shows you that everyone needs to rest.
There are still some obvious problems with our kicking and basic skills, also listening to instructions, but we will work on these at training, guys anytime you can go outside and have a kick DO IT. It will only help you come game day, the more you put in the more you will get out.
Thank you to the U14 boys Connor, Koolyn, Kizza for sitting around all day, I am sorry for lack of game time, but I also have a responsibility for you and the last thing I want to see is anyone getting hurt while helping us out. I hope everyone understands this.
We now come up against a vastly different Roxburg Park, so boys be prepared for this week and do not take them lightly. We need to come out exactly like we did this week and show them why we are playing finals.
Good game guys.
Darryl Maher - Coach U16 div 2
All things being equal
It’s the team whose members are prepared to not only work with, but for each other, that wins. This requires a high level of commitment to sacrificial acts, i.e. individual players are sincerely committed to making sacrifices so their mates can be more efficient and effective.
Round 9 - Match Day report - Glenroy
20th June 2010
Got away with a win!!!!!!
From the outset of the day, from the very first ball up in the middle you could tell that NO ONE was ready to play.
What is it with these teams we should be beating by 10 goals, we ALWAYS struggle with in the first half, and someone needs to tell me why!!!!
You were lucky I couldn’t talk at half time; some home truths would / should have come out.
Some of you guys are playing for spots in the finals and the way half of you went about it, it seems your not interested in playing, so that’s fine with us, we will find kids who want to play, if that’s a little reality check for some of you good take it in!!!
If not for Nick, Ricky A, Sead all day, with Bryce, Zach, Bellie, Jyden, Dave, Doug , for most of the day, those guys would have ran away with a win
Why is it the same 6-8 players every week, that put there all in it game after game after game, we need someone to help these guys, someone has to put there hand up and say stuff it, this week is my week to do something, this includes training!!
A very big thank you to the guys from div 5 for helping out today, as you can see it is a bit of a step up with the pace of the game for starters, but you all did well and had a few kicks, was great to see.
As you may tell from the tone of this report, myself, Ed and Shane aren’t to pleased with the weekends effort, yes a win is a win, but thing will need to drastically lift if you think you will go anywhere in the finals, lets see what happens this week against Hadfield, another we could have won first up, but let it slip, HUGE game this week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THE LITTLE THINGS
The difference between mediocrity & greatness is EXTRA EFFORT.
IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY- everyone is relying on you.
Round 8 - Match Day report - Avondale Heights
6th June 2010
3 weeks, 3 wins in a row well done
Another hard day in the office boys, to come out in the end with another great victory has now set you guys up for a massive tilt at the finals football
We went into this little personal grudge match for me, very confident, no fan fare again and just went about our business again.
We stuck to our structures for most of the day which is pleasing; we still have some work to do on the concentration side and working for 4 quarters not just 3 as we have been doing.
As we continuously tell you the need to talk and help your team mates out is paramount in any win and it was evident in the 3rd quarter that this slipped a little allowing Avondale a sniff of a win, it was good to see the amount of pressure you put on in the last, the never say die attitude was fantastic, even within the final couple of minutes, I had the confidence in you guys to win the game, you chased and harassed and tackled and smothered, not letting up on the prize, well done
With the help of some of our brothers from our div5 team it ended up a good day, thanks to Nathan, Johnny K, Corey and James you all did well and hopefully you will get another chance in the div2 team soon.
Remember we have a few guys from TLFC playing in the EDFL rep teams this week, so get out and support your club and team mates from u12 through to u15, check out EDFL for times and where.

The little things in football can & will make all the difference.

Round 7 - Match Day report - Sydenham Hillside
30-May-2010
Congratulations again boys.
As I said after the game, hopefully you now believe you are a bloody good team!!
We went into our grudge match quietly confident, no fan fare and just went about our business, while they were yelling and yahooing from before half time in the u14’s, wasting all their energy, now wasn’t it funny to see. I was wrapped with the way you guys went about your whole pre match routine, well done not getting caught up in all the hoohaa going on. Very professional.
Guys with so many of you playing well it is hard to single players out, all our awards each week are hard to do as we only have 3 to give and so many are playing well. Your turn will come.
From Nick continually playing a captains game, to our unsung heroes in the backline Zach, David, Peter (remember first option!!) All our midfield Dean, Bryce, Luke, the Ricky’s, Doug and what a little talent Dom. Our forwards have now become a hard unit and will only improve as a team within our team, to the most unusual ruck duo in Johnny and Ad’s, and obviously all our other brothers in arms, guys believe in each other like you did on the weekend and anything is possible
Remember to get to training and practice your shots on goal, and lets have a real good week on the track and come out pumped for Avondale this week, we showed in the practice match we can beat these guys, so come prepared to play and another victory is within grasp!!
Again a very big thank you to our u14 boys who help out each week
Darryl Maher - Coach
I KEEP TELLING YOU------ YOU ARE A BLOODY GOOD TEAM!!!!
Round 6 - Match Day report - Maribyrnong Park
22-May-2010
Congratulations boys!!!!!!
Today was a very good day in that firstly we won, but also the fact that a bit of self belief has come into the team and that is a very important thing to have, believe in yourselves and your teammates and the rewards will follow, well done!
Congratulations to Bryce on his 100th game this week, and what a very good game it was, how they let 1 of our best ball movers free ALL day was amazing but hey we will take it, congrats mate.
With a couple of injury worries we had to change our set up slightly, but how good was everyone today, all from our 2 new ruckmen, to our new mids, to our new forwards, everyone stepped up and showed how, if we play tough un compromising, full on pressure all day football, how good a team we can be, the movement of the ball from our half backline was great to watch, the delivery into the forward line was the best all year. Well done Johnny Gus and Ad’s in the ruck really well fought out. Well done Dom on your first taste at div2 hopefully we can keep onto you for a few more games?
With a very important game coming up, we really need to stay focused on the job boys and come into our mid year break with a couple of really great wins on the board.
Get to training and we can keep working on our set ups and keep getting better and better each week, well done!!
Darryl Maher - Coach U16
YOU ARE A BLOODY GOOD TEAM!!!!
Round 4 - Match Day report - Moonee Valley
9-May-2010
Disappointing day today!!
Guys in a nutshell,
We were flat before the game and carried it into the game.
We Fumbled, dropped marks, missed targets cost us the game.
I am confident we are the better team and will beat then in the return game.
This is now the 3rd week in a row where we have been flat at the start of the game, you could sense something was amiss before the game, everyone was quiet and not much was happening, we just couldn’t put our finger on it.
Well done to boys in our backline AGAIN!!! I would hate to think what would have happened if our back 6 didn’t turn up. We need you guys switched on every week and you can see you’re becoming a fearsome unit, keep up your run and carry, but do remember our team rules and use FIRST OPTION.
Our midfield was solid again and gave us first use of the ball but our delivery and hit ups into the forward line needs to be cleaner, eg. Must hit leads or correct delivery to fat side.
Forwards, Forwards, Forwards
Guys when we ask you to start in a position that is where we need you to start from, you need to lead with authority, (DEMAND THE FOOTBALL) have got to hold marks and don’t give up the football with out a fight, DEFENSIVE PRESSURE!!! You guys all need to practice your shot at goals, not these dribble from the boundary crap, shots from in front, slightly to side 20-30 metres out. Take it upon yourself to improve yourself.
When you remember to put into action what we practice, you seriously look unbeatable! As soon as you start switching and running in numbers, doing the little things to help out your team mates, everyone comments on how good you guys look.
One good thing to come out of the day NO INJURIES!!!
Thanks again to u14 boys for helping out Connor and Koolyn, well done boys
Keep your heads up,
YOU ARE A BLOODY GOOD TEAM!!!!
Darryl Maher - Coach
Round 3 - Match Day report - Airport West
2nd-May-2010
Terrific win again today boys,
2 weeks in a row now we have started slowly, in that we thought we were just going to win without doing the hard stuff. Hence we were only 1 goal up at ¼ time, after a spray you guys responded. Hopefully next week we can come out all guns blazing and show our supporters what we are capable of.
Our 2nd quarter was a lot better, we opened our forward line up, we started winning more ball in the middle, Bryce’s job on their most dangerous player was fantastic, after the switch he completely cut him out from the game, well done.
Luke and Nick played great games, Luke had a role and did it to a t, and Nick would have been up to 40 possessions and gave us first use many times.
We are wrapped in the way our back 6 are going about it, you guys have not put a foot wrong and god help any forward line you guys meet!!
After half time when a couple of simple points were highlighted, to your credit everyone changed their thinking and remembered WE are a team and can bring our teammates into the game and share the ball around, our structures were good and all kept to our game plan, you switched play with ease and our run from the backline was great again. Your kicking to the fat side into forward 50 was spot on again with great leading from the forwards.
Last ¼ was good and you finished the game out really well, with plenty of run and encouragement for team mates.
All round a pleasure to watch, and the feedback I am getting from spectators they love the way you guys ALL run and carry and help each other out, WELL DONE!
Another couple of injuries though were a bit disappointing, Akash should be ok if he can remember his name, and Ad’s 5 stitches and 1 week out.
Well done boys
Darryl Maher - Coach
Round 2 - Match Day report - Roxburg Park
Terrific win today boys,
Any win by nearly 100 points has to be a good win.
I thought we started off slowly in first quarter and think that maybe you guys had already thought you had this game won before we played it!! We were beaten through the centre nearly all quarter and wasn’t until it was highlighted it turned around.
Our 2nd quarter was terrible I thought, again was highlighted at half time, everyone was prepared to run forward of the ball, but NOBODY was prepared to run back the other way, which was very disappointing in that we are better than that and we need to run back hard to get back to the contest. We clogged our forward line up with selfish football; simply put (you were chasing kicks) we need to keep our forward line open for our forwards to work in, at 1 point we had our HFFers in our goal square (why?) chasing an easy kick.
We don’t do that!!
You will learn through the year, playing selfish football won’t cut it in div 2; everyone has a job and if everyone can do it better than their opponent then we will probably win.
After half time when a couple of simple points were highlighted, to your credit everyone changed their thinking and remembered WE are a team and can bring our teammates into the game and share the ball around, our structures were good and all kept to our game plan, you switched play with ease and our run from the backline was a pleasure to watch. Really, really pleased to see and as such we had our best ¼ for the game, well done! Your kicking to the fat side into forward 50 was as good as AFL.
Last ¼ was good and you finished the game out really well, with plenty of run and encouragement for team mates, terrific to watch.
Our biggest downer for the day was big Anth, he dislocated his shoulder and had to wait a while for Ambo’s to turn up, Anth will probably be out for up to 7 weeks, so hopefully a speedy recovery for you mate, we will all be thinking about you and you will be missed on the ground.
Congratulations to Walla on your 50th game, well done.
Well done boys
Darryl Maher - Coach
Round 1 - Match Day report - Hadfield
18th April 2010
Well guys first round down 13 to go!
First would like to say a big welcome to all new players and parents to our team, especially to those from our U14 teams last year.
As I think you are all aware that Hadfeild won nearly all grand finals in all divisions last year and I couldn't help but hear the talk, oh my god we have Hadfield aren't they big have a look at him, have a look at that oh my!! Simply we really don't need this!!.. To go into a game with our kids thinking we have already lost a game. These guys put in a great pre season and we will win more game than we lose, but we all need to be together in this or it starts to unravel.
Guys I was really happy with the way you went about our game, everyone listened to instructions and executed them to the letter, our set ups were working early, our forwards were gelling and not competing against each other, you ran to position well, lead well, it was good to watch,
However we do need to hold our marks on the lead, far to many were dropped and then you have undue pressure on yourself and need to have that 2nd and 3rd effort, which you did well but wouldn't need to if marks were held to start. We will get better!
To single a player out which I usually don't do, but............
I thought that Sead played his best game for Taylors Lakes in 2 years, maybe leadership sits well with you mate? The way he ran and attacked the ball and took them on was a joy to watch, he listened to what we said about taking risks, he listened to us about running and creating for forwards but also have immense pressure on his opponent every time the ball came down, well done.
In fact our whole back 6 were fantastic, you guys will gel really well together there, which is what is needed to be able to trust each other and the confidence in each other, well done guys
Our midfield started well and our set up's and general play was superb, we have a real classy outfit in there and will beat most opponents 1 on 1, we have a couple of small things to work on, but that will come again with practice and matches, keep it up.
We need EVERYONE to get to training not just when you feel like it, as we say- you actually don't have to train, but don't complain when someone else get a game before you!!..
We are a team and you are only letting your team mates down when you cant be bothered!!...
Next week our Div 5 brother have a bye and we have Roxy, so a couple of boys from Div 5 will be in the mix, so turn up and be counted.
Pre season is over and the real stuff starts now, if you want to get on board, get on , if not move aside because we don't want passengers who don't do team things!
A game we let slip and should have won, but was pleasing to see no one threw in the towel
Keep the heads up and lets have a good crack next week

Selection Policy U16’s
14-April-2010
Warm up together on both nights of the week.
- The 1st 16’s coach to pick squad of 22-24 players to train
(consisting of better players from previous 2nd 16’s game who wish to play in 1st 16 team).
- Remaining players to train with 2nd 16’s coach
Before the end of 2nd nights training, 1st 16’s coach to announce side for weekends game. Players not selected in team return to 2nd 16’s coach for remaining of training.
Coaches will consult on 1st nights training on who played well for following weeks selections, taking into consideration the draw & ladder positions.
If it becomes evident that 1st 16’s cannot make finals, the players that can become eligible for 2nd 16’s finals (if they can qualify) must be selected in the 2nd 16’s, as in 2005, our first year of 2 under 16 teams.
Depending on registrations each team will have min 24 players each with max 26 players each, if total registrations are higher than 48 a rotation policy will apply, as per past seasons
You have received an information sheet to fill in, with the option to choose which grade you prefer. Some players will not want to play in the 1st 16’s.
If a player isn’t selected in 1st 16’s and plays well for a few weeks, he will be given the opportunity to play in the 1st 16’s, in reverse if a player is struggling for whatever reason he should be given the opportunity to go back to 2nd 16’s & get his confidence back & work to be promoted back to 1st 16’s. This will also work for disciplinary reasons and injuries as well.
It should be the coaches’ responsibility to always push for players to play at higher level in 16’s.
This is one step away from senior football & not U10’s
This selection policy has worked well in the past and has been approved by TLFC committee for season 2010.
The committee feels this is the best way to develop our player for senior & U18 football, which only have 1 team,
Good luck to all our boys

Avondale Heights practice match
22-Mar-2010
Well guys was finally good to get onto the field for a real crack.
Our day was overall a success, in that as coaches we were able to see how all you guys played in different positions, and positions you weren't used to, and all of you played some fantastic football.
We were happy to see the enthusiasm and desire to get the ball and basically have a bit of fun with the mates that you guys are becoming.
Congrats to Doug and Azz on being our captains for the day, both for very different reasons, but both truly earned, well done boys.
To all new players into the U16's, was a bit of a baptism of fire for you I think, stepping into the unknown for the first time, you all played terrific up against some bigger bodies, no one took a backwards step which was very pleasing to see. Some of you played footy like you haven't before, taking strong pack marks and running on, taking a bounce or 2.
Guys, no one will berate you for having a go, give it your best and if we come up short, well, so be it.
Hopefully you all saw the effect of having a strong pre season can give you, how good did it feel to see your opposition slowing down,
When we were just hitting our straps, lets all get to training this week for our coming match, and have a real dip this week again boys. Lets get out on the track and work on our set ups some more, so they become second nature to you all.
Don't forget, if you are unsure about anything we are saying ask questions.
Well done
Darryl
